Types of Dog Breeds

There are such a wide variety of dog breeds around today that it can be difficult deciding which one would suit you and your family best. Below is an overall description of the main dog breeds and their common characteristics.

What different dog types are there?

All of the various breeds have been generalized into seven distinct categories as show below.

Sporting Dogs

These dogs are known to be very attentive and this usually makes them a likable breed with good character. Some of the more popular breeds in this category are the Spaniels, Setters, Pointers and Retrievers. Usually very energetic and active dogs, you should consider that this dog breed will require lots of walking and exercise.

The Hound Group of Dogs

This dog breed has a long and distinguished history involved with hunting and tracking. Known for having a keen eye and an outstanding sense of smell, they will need plenty of exercise. Well known dogs in this breed are the Afghan hounds and Beagles.

Working Dogs

These dogs have been bred to carry out specific tasks. Never the family pet, some were bred strong for sled pulling and moving heavy loads whilst others were bred for agility and lightness of foot for sheep herding and animal husbandry. Classic examples are the Husky, Great Dane and Doberman Pinscher. Not entirely suitable for small home or very small children.

The Terrier Group

Your typical terrier will have a feisty, energetic temperament. Bred to hunt and kill vermin and small animals, they have bucket loads of courage and agility with an intelligence that befits the job. They make excellent pets where space is at a premium. Sometimes they can be short tempered with small children.

The Toy Dogs or Small Dog Breeds

By a large margin, the Chihuahua is the most popular dog breed in this category. Very popular with celebrities this diminutive animal is ideal for people who live in small apartments and city dwellers. Costs for food and care are much lower than a bigger dog but they can suffer from common ailments that may incur veterinarian bills. Your classic toy dogs are the Pomeranian, Bichon Frise etc.

Non – Sporting Dog Types

These dogs include the Chow Chow, Boston Terrier and Dalmatian. They are a varied and diverse group and due to this it can be difficult to group them with any one personality trait or overall character. With a wide variety of coats, sizes and function this particular type of dog has something for everyone.

Herding Dogs

This breed was only acknowledged as an independent breed by the AKC in 1983. Bred purely for herding dogs, they have an ability for adapt ion and function. One of the best examples is the Corgi which is a low set animal that has retained its ability to control much larger animals. Herding animals takes intelligence and guile of which these dogs have plenty. You will not find a more faithful friend.

Miscellaneous Class

This class of dogs includes breeds which have yet to achieve full status within the AKC. When the AKC decides that a dog breed belongs to a certain group, they are moved from the miscellaneous class. Within each of these classifications of dogs, there are several different varieties.
